TOM POWERS, FOUNDER

Tom started his career as a Criminal Defense Investigator for The Legal-Aid Society of Brooklyn, New York. The Legal-Aid Society is one of the largest law firms in New York City, with over 300 attorneys. As a Criminal Defense Investigator, Tom worked directly with a cluster of 33 public defenders and managed 30-60 criminal cases per month, including serial rape, murder, and vehicular homicide.

Wanting to take his career to the next level, Tom transitioned to the Federal Public Defender, where he practiced for six years. On a daily basis, Tom located and interviewed witnesses, drafted comprehensive reports, and identified and collected records to include: prior dispositions, police reports, and publicly accessible government records.  Tom has testified in the U.S. District Court and the New York State Supreme Court and has counseled attorneys in pre-trial negotiation and mid-trial assessments.

Throughout his tenure, Tom's investigative work  exposed:

  • A pervasive racist and anti-Semitic motorcycle gang within the Chicago Police Department whose police members planted guns on minority suspects resulting in charges being dropped and the client's release.

  • A $10MM real estate fraud involving the illegal sale of condominiums owned by a bank as a means to satisfy construction loans.

  • Previously unknown criminal actions involving a government witness in a $1.5MM mortgage fraud which resulted in the client being offered a no-jail plea.

  • A municipal police agency's failure to investigate the factual circumstances surrounding the death of a complainant which resulted in the client being released on appeal after serving three months of a 36-month sentence.

  • A large scale multi-million dollar business enterprise scheme where the client was "the middle man" hired by an organized crime operation attempting to repatriate $5MM into the United States.
